7 May 2013 – Best Travel Advice

Sweet Home, Rhode Island

Thought of the Day

I was recently asked for my best travel advice.  I could go on and on about travel, but I didn’t have to think long to come up with this response.

My best travel advice is to shun the guide books.  And don’t pack your schedule with checklists of things to see, because you end up trampling through your vacation feeling the pressure Continue Reading…

The Road Ahead

Thought of the Day

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I suppose the same is true for journey of 21,000 miles.   I heard a report on the radio this morning about a journalist who is literally walking across the world.  Spanning seven years and covering 21,000 miles, Paul Salopek began his trek in Ethiopia and will end on the southern tip of Chile.  You can read more about his adventure here or follow him on Twitter here.

I’ve spent most of my career in hospitality and my love for Continue Reading…

Each snow flake is different, right?

Each snow flake is different, right?

Thought of the Day

Always remember:  You are unique.  Just like everybody else.

TotD – 25 April 2013 – It’s Not How Long, but How

Jump.

Jump.

Thought of the Day

Life is what we are alive to.  It is not length but breadth.  To be alive only to appetite, pleasure, pride, money-making, and not to goodness, kindness, purity, love, history, poetry, music, flowers, stars, God, and eternal hope is to be all but dead.

I’ve been reminded on several occasions recently Continue Reading…

TotD – 24 April 2013 – The Gate of Change

Be patient...it'll come around.

Be patient…it’ll come around.

Thought of the Day

No one can persuade another to change.  Each of us guards a gate of change that can only be opened from the inside.  We cannot Continue Reading…

TotD – 22 April 2013 – Don’t fear the attempt

Me and my kids

Thought of the Day

Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing the attempt.

- William Shakespeare

Just a few words as I reflect back on last week.  What an amazing week it was!  I realized a life long dream of displaying my art in an exhibit, albeit in a small, humble way.  I’ve learned not to despise humble beginnings.  You can’t take a journey without the first few steps, no matter how small those steps might be.  Through the doubts, I’m happy that I didn’t fear the attempt.

The support from my friends and family was awesome, and I’m so grateful for the love I felt in the room on opening night.  To have my kids there to share in the moment meant the world to me.  As I said that night, they drive me to be better.

TotD – 10 April 2012 – Psst…You working on your legacy?

Thought of the Day

Be a good ancestor.  Stand for something bigger than yourself.  Add value to the earth during your sojourn.

- Marian Wright Edelman

Steven Covey noted in Seven Habits of Highly Effective People that one of the principles of being effective is to “start with the end in mind.”

When it’s all said and done, what will you have said and done?

Sometimes I struggle to answer that.  Or maybe the answer comes easily, Continue Reading…

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.
